What to wear for the Normandy D-Day beaches

Layers, a waterproof and shoes you do not mind getting wet. The wind comes off the Channel with nothing in its way and the sites are almost entirely outdoors. Every month in Normandy has between eight and ten days of rain, so a jacket is not a precaution, it is standard equipment. For the cemeteries, dress as you would for a funeral.

The weather you are actually dressing for

July, the warmest month, averages 18.3 °C with highs around 22.5 °C. January averages 5.5 °C. Between those, the coast is mild and windy, and it is always several degrees colder standing on an exposed clifftop at Pointe du Hoc than it was in the car park at Bayeux. Take a layer more than the forecast suggests, and take a hat that will not blow off. The guided minivans and coaches run rain or shine, so a wet forecast will not cancel your day for you.

Footwear, site by site

Pointe du Hoc — uneven cratered ground and gravel paths. Closed toes, proper soles. The platforms on the bunkers are closed, so you will be on the paths, but the paths are not pavement.
Omaha Beach — firm sand and shingle, and a long walk to the waterline at low tide. Something you can rinse.
The cemeteries — mown grass and gravel walks, level and easy at Colleville and step-free at Bayeux War Cemetery.
Arromanches — the best view of the caissons is from the high ground east of town, which means a climb.

At the American Cemetery

This is US-administered ground and an active place of mourning for families, not a viewpoint over Omaha Beach. There is no published dress code that I can point you to, so treat what follows as advice rather than regulation: covered shoulders, no beachwear, no swimwear, voices down. Personal photography is normal and widely practised; do not pose on or against the headstones and do not photograph families who are visiting a grave. Commercial filming needs permission in advance.
